Hotteok - Korean Pancake Mix

Hotteok - Korean Pancake Mix

Hello, today I'm going to make the Beksul CJ, the sweet Korean pancake mix. This is what Korean people call the hotteok. Hotteok means like a snack, a pancake in Korean tradition, or a snack on the street. And this is very special. You can just mix the batter, and then include all the toppings, and it's very easy to enjoy the Korean snack, okay?

I'm going to show you what is inside, okay? I'm going to open. So first, there is the mix of powder, this is the pancake, the powder mix and everything. And behind there is some dry yeast. You can just split and then this is the stuff being mixed. Sugar, some nuts, and there's some dried fruit that's included inside, okay?

Okay. I'm going to open everything. So first, you can put everything in the bowl. This is a jam mix. Like this, the brown sugar. And then some of the pine nuts is included, okay? You have to mix the yeast and then the flour first. We need the warm water. Don't use not too hot water, because if it's too much hot the yeast won't fermented.

One pack needs 180 milliliters of warm water. Mix the warm water with the flour and yeast first. If you think it's too dry you can add more water, a little bit. But don't too much filling the water, because when you make the pancake like this, the shape, if you're too sticky don't put, not too much the water.

You have to wait five minutes because of... Just cover it with plastic warp and put aside for five minutes or until the batter is ready. Preheat the fry pan. You can use the small or large. But I'm going to make the one by one because you have to cook to very low temperatures, because it's going to be easier then for burn. So first I'm going to make it preheat, very low temperature.

I'm going to explain one more time. This is a hotteok, it's H-O-T-T-E-O-K, it's like a hot dog, American snack food, like hot dog or something like that, in Korea we enjoy them in the street, these are very popular. And you can enjoy it like a pancake. You can make a small size or a larger size, whatever you want to. And you can put in the topping also, you can choose any extra nuts, or some dry fruits. Or if you like a jam you can put on the jam spread and you can enjoy it like that.

And you can buy in the Asian market, searching for CJ, the Korean pancake mix. And if you put in that better and put in a very hot temperature around, it's going to be more easier... the fermented. It's not ready yet, so I'm going to wait one second. And we need some oil, pan fry oil. You can use any oil. The olive oil, canola oil, but don't use the butter, if you just put in the butter it's going to burning, it's going so fast.

So just put the cooking oil. And then if you want to make this shape we need some special sort of pancake presser. But I don't have, so you can use any spatula, or any plate, or any bowl, just flat on the bottom one, you can use for press. So I'm going to show you how to make them, but preheat is ready and you can put a little bit of the oil and coat the pan.

This batter is so sticky, so you have to put some oil on your hand. And you have to coating the presser plate. The pancake size is not matter. If you want to make a big size or small size, it does not matter. But I recommend bigger than golf ball or bigger than a small apple size.

So you can use whatever size you want. So we'll just take some dough and then press in the middle. I'm going to mix the sugar and nut stuffing. They call it the jam mix, I don't know why, but jam means, in Korea, we just prefer the spread, but you can say the jam mix. And then just fold it like a dim sum. So you can make it like this. And at the end you can just make it tight, and then I'm going to cook.

Make sure you put in the frying pan, just a plate on time first, and then after coating the presser you can press very slow. Very slow. And you can feel how much you have to press. There's not a rule, if you want to enjoy the very thin, or the thick size, whatever you want, you can press yourself, you can make it your size, okay?

So just press one time. And then when you press the plate you have to be careful, because there is easy to broke the bowl. But you can fix it, you can add a little bit of the batter add on. Especially the hotteok, we enjoy it in the winter time. It's a cold weather, we just buy for snacks. But now the batter, the pancake mix, I mean the hotteok mix, we enjoy it any time.

This is not too sweet, but if we want too sweet, or more, you can put some more of the sugar. You can cook the batter easy, just mix everything and then just put some of the sugar jam mix, and then just one or two times. This is good for the kids. Kids love the sweet pancake dough. Especially, you can put on the vanilla ice cream and put some of the syrup, or some chocolate.

You can enjoy a pancake ice cream, or something like that. You have too cook to very low heat, because if there is a hole it's easy to maintain the burning to sugar from came out. Okay. I just have to cook the one piece, because pretty big size. But when you cook the whole pack you can maybe get 10 pieces of hotteok. I'm going to add some ice cream.

I'm going to show you what it looks like inside. The very outside is crispy, and the inside, the jam, and the sugar and the nuts has melt.

Ooh, yummy.

Okay. I like it crispy though, so I just pressed the very... until the end. So when I pressed the plate, I just pressed to make it thin. Okay. You can put some syrup, or some sugar powder too, or any fruits, enjoy like this. The Korean traditional dessert.
